Table Tennis Paddle Buying Guide

We have three types of paddles available.

The Professional High-Performance level Paddles- are of the type that professionals use.
This level paddle is often ordered by selecting the blade, (the wood part of the paddle with handle) and rubber sheet sheets separately.

What matters though is the amount of, speed, spin, and control.

Competition Level Paddles This variety of paddles may be used by players who are very competitive and may play very competitive table tennis at home, recreation center or a table tennis club.

These paddles may have rubber sheet and blade details available.

Recreational paddles-This level of paddle is bought complete. Our selection of this type of paddle are often available in minimum pre packed quantities.

Guide Table Tennis Rubber Sheets

When the ball impacts the rubber sheet it causes the underlying sponge to compress to an optimum point. This creates extra grip on the ball and therefore greater spin. At the same time, when the sponge compresses, it creates a rebound force which will catapult the ball off the racket surface for the optimum speed and spin.

Table Tennis Rubber Selection Factors

SPEED-The ability to easily create faster ball speed based on a rubber’s power created by the sponge rebound force and top sheet hardness. Higher speed rubbers also called faster since they produce faster shots. Speed differences between rubbers are greater with 2.5 or 2.0mm sponges. Attacking Players usually prefer the fastest rubbers while defensive players may prefer slower rubbers.

SPIN- The ability to create stronger spin is determined mainly by the composition and quality of the table tennis rubber top sheet.

POWER FACTOR-The sum of spin and speed ratings. Powerful rubbers combine high speed with strong topspin to create maximum attacking power.

2.5mm- The maximum thickness allowed under the rules. The term 2.5 is often used in a general way to express the maximum thickness of sponge allowed for a rubber sheet to maintain a total rubber/sponge thickness that is within the total allowed under the rules. Depending on the particular rubber sheet the actual maximum thickness of sponge will probably be something more like 2.15mm or 2.3mm.
2.0mm-This is the most popular thickness. 2.0mm combines offensive power with more control than 2.5mm. 2.0mm is also preferred by some spinning or attacking players who use light, medium fast “quick attack” blades, particularly for close-to-the table attacking.
1.0, 1.5mm- Thinner sponge rubbers provide maximum control and “touch” for players emphasizing steady all-around play or a defensive style. 1.5mm is sometimes used by quick hitting or blocking players.

CUSTOM ASSEMBLED TABLE TENNIS PADDLES-We will assemble any combination of rubber and blade you would like. Custom assembled paddles consist of your choice of blade (wood) combined with rubber. 2.0mm rubber is most popular on custom paddles and will be used unless another thickness is specified.

These paddles have the same rubber on both sides and perform at a much lower level than the custom assembled variety. This type of table tennis paddle can be a good choice for casual players.

Description of Table Tennis Rubber Sheets Inverted (Pips-In) Smooth Rubber

The most popular type of rubber today. The tips of the pips are glued on to sponge creating a smooth, high-spin producing surface. Inverted rubber without sponge is not permitted by the rules.

Description of Table Tennis Pips-Out Rubber

The flat side of the rubber sheet is glued either to a sponge layer 
(the most common type of pips out) or directly to the wood surface of the blade.

Pipsout Rubber with no sponge

This is a rubber type that was very popular for many years until the advent of the use of a layer of sponge under the rubber top sheet. This was called “Sandwich Rubber” also for years.
Pips out rubber without sponge will be less affected by your opponents spin.
Pips out rubber tends to allow for greater speed.

long Pips Rubber. Long pips rubber is a type of pips out that is long and thin and relatively pliable.
This allows the impact of an opponents incoming shot to crush the pips and absorb the force and then get a good grip onto the ball to allow for a lot of spin to be produced with relatively little motion.

Paddle Assembly

1) Apply a thin, but even coat of rubber cement to the sponge backing of the rubber sheet. The rubber cement should cover the entire sponge surface of the rubber sheet that will cover the wood of the blade.

2) Apply a thin, but even coat of rubber cement to just one side of the wood blade.

3) Allow the rubber cement to dry to a tackiness on both the wood blade and the sponge on the rubber sheet. This usually takes a few minutes.

4) To apply the rubber sheet to the blade, begin by holding the rubber sheet with the molded rubber name at the bottom. Center the rubber sheet over the wood blade, and line up the bottom of the rubber sheet to the top of the racket handle. Hold the rubber sheet in a curled back fashion, as depicted in the above photo. Then carefully, place the rubber sheet directly to the wood blade starting at the bottom, and slowly rolling the rubber sheet onto the surface of the blade.

5) After the rubber has been applied to one side of the blade, turn the blade over so the newly applied rubber is side down. Set only the head of the blade on a table top, with the handle of the blade off the edge of the table.

Place a book or other item with a flat, even surface over the head of the blade. Press firmly on the book and hold for a minute or two. The book will serve to evenly distribute the pressure on the racket protecting the rubber and insuring the best bond between the rubber and the wood.

6) Trim the rubber sheet with either a Xacto knife or scissors.

If you use a Xacto knife, it is important NOT to try to cut through the entire rubber sheet in one cut. It is advisable to first trace around the edge of the blade lightly with the Xacto knife, cutting a grove in the sponge. Trace over this grove with the Xacto knife repeatedly, until the cut is all the way through both the sponge and rubber layer. When cutting, use the edge of the wood blade as a guide and hold the Xacto knife as perpendicular to the table top as possible. This will provide the smoothest edge.

If you use a scissors, start at the bottom of the racket head and cut around the entire head of the racket. Use the wood blade as a guide and try to cut as close to the wood blade as possible.

Repeat steps 1 – 6 for the opposite side of the paddle.

7) Apply side tape to protect the edge of the paddle.

It is helpful to first put a thin layer of rubber cement over the edge of the paddle for added adherence of the side tape.

Start at the bottom edge of the rubber sheet on one side and center the tape on the side edge of the paddle. Press down on the beginning of the tape to secure a bond.

8) Pull taught the tape and apply around the remaining paddle edge. Cut the side tape where the rubber ends on the other side of the paddle.

Replacing the Rubber on an Already Assembled Paddle

Grip the rubber and sponge at the bottom of the paddle head. Peel off from the wood. If any sponge residue remains on the wood, remove carefully with a scraper and/or sandpaper

Paddles are not returnable except for defects. If a paddle is broken the manufacturer will not replace it because paddles do not break from normal usage.
